The first Article of the Constitution outlines the numerous power of Congress and how it shall be structured. The structure of how Congress was made was a big issue. Whether it advantages the large states of the newly formed union like Virginia or the smaller states like New Jersey was heatedly debated. Ultimately, the fair compromise was shown in our current structure of the houses. The House of Representatives is based on the population of the states and the Senate is a uniform number of representatives. The powers that the Constitution outlines for Congress are mainly typical national powers but also powers meant to limit a body of government. Whether it be the power to impeach governmental officers like the president or restricting states from doing certain things, Article I tries to implement a check and balance on governments. Overall, Article I is short and concise, it provides the power to Congress for a strong enough government for the people to reside in and pursue the pursuit of happiness as a nation, unlike the Articles of Confederation which did not create a strong enough national government.
